4th Grade Mathematics
-Unit 4: Fun with Fractions-
In our Fractions Math Unit, students will explore and generate equivalent fractions by modeling and using multiplication. Students will also learn how to reduce a fraction to its simplest form, compare and order fractions, and add, subtract, and decompose fractions. In chapter 6, students will learn how to compare fractions using multiple strategies, including using number lines and benchmarks (0, 1/2, and 1). Then, in chapter 7, students will learn how to add and subtract fractions with like denominators.
Additionally, students will learn that a fraction can be more than one whole. We will no longer refer to these fractions as "improper," but rather, we will emphasize that they are greater than one whole and can also be represented as a mixed number. Students will get practice renaming mixed numbers and fractions greater than a whole in our Go Math lesson 7.6.
