4th Grade Mathematics
Unit 1: Numbers and Operations in Base Ten
Welcome back to school! In this first unit of 4th grade math, students will explore and discover answers to the following essential questions:
- How can you use place value to compare, add, subtract, and estimate whole numbers?
- How do you compare and order whole numbers?
- What are some strategies you can use to round whole numbers?
- How is adding 5- and 6-digit numbers similar to adding 3-digit numbers?
The unit begins with Chapter 1 of the Go Math text book, which focuses on place value and reading and writing numbers through the hundred thousands place. Students will review the difference between standard form, expanded form, and word form. We will stress to students the importance of being about to read and say a number in standard form because "If you can SAY it, you can WRITE it!"
Students will also learn how to compare, order, and round whole numbers through the hundred thousands. The unit ends with lessons on adding, subtracting and problem-solving with greater numbers.
Please take a moment and view the vocabulary for this chapter and let your home room teacher know if you have questions.
