4th Grade English Language Arts
-Unit 1: Journeys-
Welcome back to school!
This month, 4th graders will begin our Journeys literature unit in which they will study main ideas and details, theme, character traits, and author's point of view through characters that are taking important journeys in their life. Many of these journeys require strength and perseverance, two traits that we would like to impress on our students as they begin this journey into 4th grade.

As part of our Journey unit, the 4th grade teachers will read aloud Bud, Not Buddy, by Christopher Paul Curtis, while the students will follow along in their copy of the book. They will apply reading comprehension skills they have learned in previous grades and strengthen their understanding by examining the characters traits and the theme of the story.
In language, students will review nouns and verbs, as well as sentence types (simple, compound, and complex); this will help students write complete, detailed sentences.
In writing, students will compose a five paragraph personal narrative focused on a journey they have taken. This will accompany the Journey poster they will work on at home (please see the flyer that was sent home the first week of school). The personal narrative will be completed in class as students work through the writing process; the poster will be due on Friday, September 1st. The students will present their posters to the class using the PVLEGS strategies for speaking in the following weeks.
This Week's "I Can Statements" Students are working towards mastering the ELA Common Core standards. For every unit and set of lessons, students have learning objectives or targets. At the end of the unit or lesson, the "I can" statement should hold true. 10/30-11/3 English Language Arts: I can read informational text and use text features.
